India Carpet & Rug Market Overview (2025)

India is the world’s largest exporter of handmade carpets, shipping $1.54 billion in FY2024-25 to 168 countries, with an industry estimate of about 40% of global handmade trade. The United States dominates demand at $825 million, more than half of exports, which is why most large exporters keep a US office or warehouse.

The map is simple: the Bhadohi-Mirzapur belt in Uttar Pradesh is the historic hand-knotting heartland with over two million artisans across the trade, Panipat runs the hand-tufted, handloom and recycled-yarn volume, Jaipur adds the artisan-network model, and Kashmir weaves GI-tagged silk at the luxury end.

Tariffs whipsawed the trade: duties on Indian carpets jumped from 2.9% to over 50% in August 2025, US-bound shipments fell 9%, then the February 2026 deal brought the rate to 18%. Orders are rebuilding through 2026, and the India Carpet Expo in Bhadohi each October is where much of the buying happens.

Timelines depend on technique. Hand-knotted custom work runs months and is priced per knot density; hand-tufted programs ship in weeks; and the strongest in-stock programs deliver worldwide in about three weeks ex-factory. Trial orders of a handful of pieces are workable at design-led exporters, container programs at the big houses.

Ethics are checkable here: GoodWeave and Care & Fair address child labor in the weaving belt, SA8000 and SEDEX audits are common at export scale, and Kashmiri and Bhadohi carpets carry GI protection. As everywhere, certificates should be verified at the loom shed level, which is precisely what an on-site audit does.
