Market overview

Sourcing shoe from India in 2026

India is the world’s second-largest footwear producer with about 10.7% of global output, and its export basket of leather, leather goods and footwear reached $5.7 billion in FY2024-25, up 25%. The US takes about a fifth of it, with Germany and the UK next.

Trade terms swung India’s way in 2026. The February deal cut the US tariff from a 50% peak to 18%, now below competing origins, and the UK agreement in force since July 2026 dropped footwear duties of up to 16% to zero, with projections of up to $1.5 billion in extra UK sales over three years.

Three leather hubs split the work. The Ambur-Ranipet-Chennai belt makes dress and welted shoes with in-house tanneries, Agra runs the largest fashion cluster with 5,000+ units, and Kanpur owns boots and safety footwear. Delhi-NCR adds non-leather volume. India’s own tanning chain, with one of the world’s deepest LWG bases, means your uppers never cross a border before assembly.

MOQs start around 300 pairs per colour at certified mid-size units, with a few hundred pairs possible at smaller workshops and thousands expected at the corporate exporters. Plan 30 to 60 days of production and standard AQL 2.5 pre-shipment inspection; BIS quality orders apply to domestic sales, not export production.

Read client lists carefully: some brand associations are named on company sites rather than verified by the brands, and capacity figures are self-reported. That is normal in this industry, and it is exactly what a factory audit confirms before your deposit, down to which unit actually sews your order.
