Finding a manufacturer in India is easy. Finding the right one, in the right city, with real export paperwork and capacity that matches your order, is the actual work. This guide covers the four routes buyers use, what each costs in time and risk, and the checks that separate exporters from middlemen.
- Route one: B2B marketplaces (IndiaMART, TradeIndia) for speed, with heavy vetting needed. Route two: trade fairs like the IHGF Delhi Fair for face-to-face shortlists twice a year. Route three: export promotion council directories (EPCH, AEPC, CLE) for pre-screened exporters. Route four: a sourcing agent on the ground who does the vetting, negotiation and QC for you. Whatever the route, verify the IEC first and the certificates at the exact production unit.

Route 1: B2B marketplaces
IndiaMART, TradeIndia and ExportersIndia list millions of suppliers and answer inquiries within hours. They are the fastest way to see what exists, and the noisiest. Listings mix real factories, traders and brokers without distinction, minimums and certifications are aspirational until proven, and the best export factories often barely maintain their profiles because their order books are full.
Use marketplaces to map the landscape and collect names, not to pick a partner. Every name you like still needs the verification pass below.
Route 2: trade fairs
India’s export fairs compress months of scouting into days. The IHGF Delhi Fair, run by EPCH twice a year, gathers thousands of handicraft, furniture and decor exporters. Bharat Tex covers textiles at national scale, the India Carpet Expo in Bhadohi runs each October, and sector fairs cover leather, stone and jewellery.
Fairs let you touch product quality and meet the actual exporters. Their limit: booth impressions favor marketing budgets over production discipline, and the factory you visit after the fair matters more than the booth.
Route 3: export promotion councils
Every Indian export sector has a government-backed council with a member directory: EPCH for handicrafts, AEPC for apparel, CLE for leather, CEPC for carpets, GJEPC for gems and jewellery, and FIEO across sectors. Members are registered exporters, which filters out the purely domestic and the imaginary.
Council membership is a floor, not a seal of quality. It confirms an export track record exists; it says nothing about whether the factory suits your product, price point or compliance needs.
Route 4: a sourcing agent on the ground
An agent replaces the three routes above with a curated shortlist, then stays for negotiation, sampling, in-production QC and logistics. The economics usually work when you value your time honestly: a percentage-based fee against weeks of scouting, a flight or two, and the cost of one bad container.
That is our job at Primo. We put your order in the right specialist hub, from a clothing factory in Tirupur to a furniture workshop in Jodhpur, audit before you commit, and inspect before you pay. Our services page details the process.
The verification pass, whatever the route
Five checks before any deposit
IEC check
No Importer-Exporter Code on the DGFT registry means no legal export. Thirty seconds, eliminates a surprising share of candidates.
Factory or trader?
Ask for the production address and visit or have it visited. Traders are legitimate in India’s cluster system, but you should know which you’re paying.
Certificates by ID
GOTS, SMETA, BSCI, LWG: check the certificate number with the issuing body against the unit on your PO.
Capacity arithmetic
Headcount times realistic daily output should comfortably cover your order plus their existing book.
Export invoice test
Exports are GST zero-rated. Indian GST on an export quote is a red flag for inexperience or padding.
Match the city before the factory
India’s export capacity is organized by specialist city, and the wrong city costs more than the wrong factory. Knitwear lives in Tirupur, home textiles in Panipat and Karur, leather goods in Kolkata, footwear in Agra and the Tamil Nadu belt, solid wood in Jodhpur, brass in Moradabad, carpets in Bhadohi, gemstone jewellery in Jaipur. Our guide to what products are made in India maps the full landscape, and our Top 12 directories shortlist vetted exporters per category.
