India Bag Market Overview (2025)
India shipped about $5.7 billion of leather, leather products and footwear in FY2024-25, up 25% on the year, with leather goods such as bags and wallets making up roughly 26% of the basket. India ranks fourth worldwide in leather goods exports, second in leather garments, on a supply chain that starts with its own hides and tanneries.
Kolkata is the capital of the trade: West Bengal accounts for roughly half of India’s leather exports and about 60% of its leather goods, anchored by the 1,100-acre Bantala complex, one of Asia’s largest integrated leather hubs. Kanpur adds tannery-integrated houses, Chennai the big vertically integrated groups, and Delhi-NCR the backpack and fashion-bag OEMs.
Compliance runs deep. India counts one of the world’s largest bases of LWG-evaluated tanneries, most of them Gold rated, and the better bag factories carry SMETA, BSCI, SA8000 or C-TPAT audits. The caveat: certification claims live on marketing pages, so serious buyers re-verify certificates at audit before signing.
Trade terms moved India’s way in 2026. The February deal put the US tariff at 18%, down from the 50% in force through late 2025, and the UK agreement in force since July 2026 dropped British duties on Indian leather goods to zero. The US, Germany and the UK are already the top three buyers.
MOQs are friendly by global standards: 100 to 300 pieces per style for handbags, around 300 units for OEM backpacks, 500 to 1,000 for jute runs, with embellished styles sometimes accepted at 50. Plan 60 to 70 working days for classic Kolkata leather orders, and as little as three weeks for synthetic OEM programs out of Delhi.
