Market case

Why source furniture from India in 2026?

India exports upwards of USD 2.2 billion of furniture a year, about 70% of it wooden, and the United States takes roughly 41% of the flow. India is the ninth-largest furniture exporter to the US, and exports still represent under a tenth of what its 20,000 manufacturers produce, so capacity is rarely the constraint.

USA, ~41% of exports (~$1.25B)

Standard MOQ

Production lead time

Door-to-door US/EU

On tariffs, be precise: since late September 2025 US furniture imports fall under Section 232 duties of 25% on wooden and upholstered furniture for every origin, which replaced India’s 50% penalty and leveled the field. Check your exact HTS line before computing landed cost.

Legality paperwork is a genuine Indian strength: the Vriksh certificate is mandatory on any sheesham shipment and supports US Lacey Act and EU deforestation compliance, while top factories carry FSC, SMETA, BSCI or C-TPAT audits. ISPM-15 packaging is standard.

The material case is the differentiator: plantation sheesham, mango and acacia, reclaimed railway timber, hand carving, bone inlay and hand-painted finishes, a look flat-pack factories elsewhere cannot replicate.

Top manufacturing hubs in India

Indian furniture production clusters in four zones, each with distinct strengths.

Jodhpur (Rajasthan)

The big one: 3,000+ exporters, 150,000+ artisans, solid and reclaimed wood, hospitality specialists, export infrastructure built over decades.

Jaipur (Rajasthan)

Large organized plants with in-house chains from seasoning to shipment, plus design-led houses with US and EU distribution arms.

Saharanpur (UP)

Wood City: hand carving in teak and sheesham, classical and royal styles, temples and doors, piece-based production.

Moradabad (UP)

Brass City crossover: metal-wood accent furniture combining mango and sheesham with brass, steel and aluminum.

For most export programs, the Jodhpur–Jaipur corridor handles the bulk of India’s wooden furniture shipments to the US and EU; Saharanpur and Moradabad complement with carving and metal-wood accents.

Due diligence

How to vet an Indian furniture manufacturer?

1

Real factory vs trading company

Ask for the GST registration, factory address and a live video tour. Jodhpur’s cluster system makes traders legitimate, but you should know which you are paying, and whether your QC report describes the workshop actually building your order.

2

Verify the IEC first

A supplier without an Importer-Exporter Code on the DGFT registry cannot legally export at all. Thirty seconds, eliminates a surprising share of candidates before anything else.

3

Check Vriksh and FSC by number

Vriksh shipment certificates are mandatory for sheesham exports; FSC certificate numbers verify on info.fsc.org. Expired or borrowed certificates exist, especially among smaller operations.

4

Match capacity to your order

A 40-artisan workshop quoting a 40ft container a month deserves arithmetic, not faith. Self-reported container volumes are marketing until customs data or an audit confirms them.

5

Production samples, not showroom samples

Showroom pieces are hand-finished by senior craftsmen. Pull samples from the current run and check finish consistency across production weeks, especially on hand-applied stains and distressing.

Numbers to plan with

MOQ, lead times & costs for Indian furniture exporters

MOQ and lead times vary by factory tier. Match your volume to the right tier to avoid being deprioritized in peak season.

Factory tier Typical MOQ Production lead time Best for
High-volume (Krishna’s, JC Antiques) 1 container per program 25 to 45 days Retail chains, multi-store rollouts
Mid-tier (Purewood, Pindel, Vivani) 25 to 50 pcs/SKU 30 to 60 days D2C brands, mixed-SKU containers
Boutique / hospitality (Suren Space, Best of Exports, Akku) 5 to 30 pcs/design 4 to 8 weeks Hotels, restaurants, premium retail

Add 21 to 50 days of sea freight depending on destination: Nhava Sheva to the US East Coast runs about 21 to 28 days, Europe 20 to 50 days by routing. Plan 75 to 110 days door-to-door and analyze landed cost per container, not unit FOB.

Payment norms are 30 to 50% advance with the PO and the balance against shipping documents. Third-party pre-shipment inspection through QIMA or Bureau Veritas costs a few hundred dollars per visit, and several factories on this list support it in their published terms.
